a humorous story of farm life – by Bob Luther
In the 1980’s we would make about 100 acres of hay, baling about 1,000 bales a day.
My wife, Diane, would drive our new John Deere tractor and would have a couple of our kids in the cab of the tractor at the same time. I would load the flat bed wagons and Eddie, with some of the neighbor boys, would unload them.
The tractor had a sound guard cab, so I used hand signals to direct Diane. Just basic left, right, stop and speed up signals.
One day after getting the wagon almost full, she saw me swinging my hands all over and stopped to see what this new signal was all about. It was a combination of every signal except the stop signal. We had hit a hornets’ nest and I was getting stung pretty good!
