a humorous story of farm life – by Bob Luther
Around 1985, I was farming with my brother, Ed. We had oats planted on the old Stauffer Farm, which is now Glen Cairn. Right at harvest time, the State was redoing the Wheatley Road bridge deck over Route 77. We needed to get over that bridge or go several miles out of the way with the John Deere combine.
I stopped by the bridge and talked to the foreman in charge to see if we could go across. He said he did some farming also and understood our problem and would let us cross.
So, we crossed and finished in a couple of days.
While coming back across, I had to stop on the now-flat deck to wait for a truck to move, so I climbed down from the combine to talk to the foreman while I waited.
Right then, a white government car pulls up. The young lady coming from the car was a government inspector for the bridge job. She put on her hard hat and approached us, and I’m thinking – I have a problem. A John Deere combine with a 16 foot grain head sitting on this flat deck isn’t exactly what an inspector would understand.
The foreman didn’t hesitate for a moment when the inspector asked about the machine. He said that it was a special piece of equipment for this job and she went on about the inspection.
