We’re pleased to announce the 2013 – 2014 Summit County Farm Bureau Academic Scholarship recipients. Please join us in congratulating our winners:
Christopher S. Esker is the son Mr. & Mrs. Christopher C. Esker of Akron. He graduated from St. Vincent – St. Mary High School and is planning to attend The Savannah College of Art and Design, majoring in Illustration/Animation/Film. Christopher would like to become an Art Illustrator.
Christopher’s honors and activities include being a member of the National Honor Society, honor roll and Academic Excellence Awards, being in the International Thespian Society and Drama Club, as well as French, Art, and Creative Writing Clubs, being in the Marching and Concert Bands, as well as receiving several awards and Varsity Band letter, being a volunteer for many community minded organizations, as well as receiving the City of Akron honoree – Volunteer Award.
Maryke Bard is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Pieter Van der Meer of Akron . Her intended field of study is Masters of Physician Assistant at the University of Mount Union. Maryke’s occupational objective is to acquire a graduate degree in Physician Assistant.
Maryke’s honors and activities include graduating Cum Laude from the University of Akron, being a moderator at the Richfield United Church of Christ, sponsoring a child from Columbia, volunteering for the RUCC Community Garden, and especially working at Akron Children’s Hospital Emergency Department and Burn Unit, helping patients that have had traumatic injuries as a result of farming accidents.
Mitchell Koellner is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Bruce Koellner of Copley. He graduated from Copley High School and will be attending The United States Military Academy at West Point. Mitchell’s field of study is Engineering. His goal is to attend a United States Service Academy and to have a career in the military.
Mitchell’s honors and activities during high school included being a member of the National Honor Society and a National Merit Scholarship Finalist, receiving the West Point Leadership award, as well as the Scholar Athlete award (six times), being involved in the Boy Scouts of America (Eagle Scout) and the Cross Country Team (Captain), and volunteering for the Summit County Farm Bureau and Adopt-a-Highway.
Brianna McVicker is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. James McVicker of Clinton. She graduated from St. Vincent – St. Mary High School and is planning to attend the University of Akron. Her intended field of study is nursing. Brianna would like to receive her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and to work in a hospital emergency room.
Brianna’s honors and activities include being on the Honor Roll (2009-2013) and a member of the International Thespian Society, being involved in Peer Ministry, Eucharistic Ministry, Irish Athletes for Christ, marching band, staff reporter for the school newspaper, and played on the basketball team, as well as the varsity track and field . She has been a member of Summit County 4-H Horse program (2004-2012), holding several offices. Brianna has received the Summit County Grand Champion for Equestrian riding and was the fifth place award winner in Equestrian Equitation Competition at the 2011 Ohio State Fair.
Kevin Menke is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bryan Menke of Stow. He graduated from Stow Monroe Falls High School and attends Stark State College. His field of study is fire and emergency services. Kevin’s goal is to become a firefighter/ paramedic and a registered nurse.
Kevin’s honors and activities include being in the Boy Scouts, having eight Eagle projects and receiving the Eagle Scout Award, being a part of the Venturing Crew 2177 (Vice President and Bronze award), being a volunteer on the Life Center Plus staff and being involved in the Summit County 4-H and the Summit County Farm Bureau organizations.
Taylor Ollis is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Mark Ollis of Copley. She graduated from Copley High School and attends the Ohio State University. Taylor’s field of study is speech and hearing science. Her occupational objective is to be a speech language pathologist.
Taylor’s honors and activities include being a member of the National Honor Society, on the Dean’s List (2011 to the present) and National Thespian Society, being a member of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association, being involved in her youth group (president), Student Council, the Key Club, and the Summit County Farm Bureau youth, and being a conversation partner with a foreign exchange student.
Janna Pearson is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Benjamin L. Pearson of Barberton. She is currently attending Walsh University. Janna’s intended field of study is nursing and her objective is to be a Registered Nurse.
Janna’s honors and activities while attending Ashland University included being on the Student Senate, in the Biology Honorary Society and on Women’s Soccer Team. After graduating from Ashland University, Janna decided to attend Walsh University, where she is in the Nursing Honor Society and is also working as Nurse Technician at Akron General Medical Center.
Once again, a big round of applause goes out to our 2013 – 2014 Summit County Farm Bureau Scholarship recipients! We look forward to hearing how you do throughout your college career and beyond.
Speaking of which, we recently received an exciting update regarding one of our past SCFB Scholarship Winners, Maddy Esker.
Maddy will be attending the University College of Dublin’s Veterinary College (Dublin, Ireland) beginning this fall.
While attending undergrad at Berry College, Maddy helped her team achieve a 2nd place finish at the Academic Quadrathlon of the Southern Section of the American Society of Animal Science. In their first-ever appearance at this event, Maddy’s team beat out competitors from several larger well-known schools, including defending national champions Texas A & M.
