If you’ve ever clicked on our “About” tab, you may have read our mission statement:
To promote agriculture through education and involvement, serving as the voice of agriculture in Summit County thus improving the viability of agriculture in an urban county. This statement has forced us to take education seriously through many avenues, over the years.
Of course, the Summit County Farm Bureau (SCFB) has been an active supporter of agriculture education with the local 4-H groups ever since the first county fair. Many volunteers have visited local school classrooms to present a variety of Ag InThe Classroom programs. In 2001, the Ag Mobile was developed, educating hundreds of children since its inception. And the SCFB Agricultural Kiosk with the American Farm games, designed in 2011, has spent time at the Akron Zoo, Hale Farm, and many local libraries.
While most of our ag education of the past has been directed at children, we have made great gains toward education for our adult members, as well.
The SCFB has invited many speakers to participate in our Annual Meetings over the years. However, the first “official” education seminar sponsored by SCFB was in 2007, The Equine Environmental & Liability Awareness Program. Over the next couple of years, additional equine seminars were offered annually. It was from those very first seminars that the demand for adult education became apparent.
