September marks the transition from summer into fall. This is the time of year when night comes earlier and the temperature begins to cool. (Although it always seems like we have some of the hottest days of the year as soon as the kids head back to school!)
Even though popular culture views Labor Day as the end of summer and the start of autumn, fall actually begins on the 23rd. Whether you think fall begins at the beginning of the month or the end, we all agree that September serves as a vivid reminder that our garden’s days are numbered, so it’s time to get busy…
• Canning time: pears, peaches, tomatoes, peppers, etc…
(there’s nothing better than enjoying the taste of summer in the dead of winter)
• Divide and replant hostas and daylillies
• Apples have ripened – go visit a local orchard and enjoy the many varieties
• Plant trees and shrubs for maximum root growth
• Plant garden mums
• Seed a new lawn or overseed an existing lawn
• Harvest the winter potato crop for storage
• Start feeding houseplants with low ammonium fertilizer
• Finish harvesting the last of the blueberries
