Not even blown transformers just moments before dinner was served could squash our spirits!

August 12, 2016 By Jan Weaver

Summit County Farm Bureau hosted Summit’s Plow to Chow, an exquisite outdoor dining experience benefiting the Ronald McDonald House of Akron on Thursday, August 4, 2016 at the SummExpensive Plow to Chowit County Farm Bureau Antique Museum.  Not even blown transformers just moments before dinner was served could squash the spirits of the guests, who completed their meals with the help of the running lights from a JOHN DEERE 7310R tractor (list price of $346,591.50), on display courtesy of Shearer Equipment.

Arriving guests were welcomed to the fairgrounds and directed to the greeting area where they began a leisurely tour of the antique museum.  Relaxing on the porch with a glass of wine and hors d’oeuvres; deviled egg with smoked bacon, heirloom grape tomato & fresh mozzarella with basil vinaigrette, cucumber and dill finger sandwiches, while listening to music was encouraged.  Brand spanking new, as well as antique tractors were on display for the guests to experience.

Guests were seated at formal dinner tables, for a six course gourmet meal of almost all locally “donated” ingredients, prepared by Chef Johnny Schulze of Zydeco Bistro, and local wine pairings, provided by Andy Troutman from The Winery at Wolf Creek.

Summit’s Plow to Chow DiningPlow to Chow was able to raise awareness of agriculture to non-farming individuals by connecting the diners to the origins of their food with each course highlighting a different commodity.  Guests enjoyed buttermilk chicken tender with peppercorn buttermilk dressing during the poultry course, kale & roasted cauliflower salad with candied pecans, feta cheese and citrus vinaigrette during the salad course, braised pork & red bean puree with summer sweet corn maque choux during the pork course, grilled certified angus beef tenderloin medallion with red wine mushroom demi, creamed spinach and scallop potato during the beef course, and a summer berry torte with raspberry coulis and fresh mint for dessert.

Andy Troutman selected the perfect wines for each course, all from The Winery at Wolf Creek.  Guests sipped a Chardonney, un-oaked blend from 2015 during passed horsWine Glasses d’oeuvres, Blind Faith, white blend, NV during the poultry course, Pinot Gris, 2015 during the salad course, Merlot, 2014 during the pork course, Cabernet Sauvignon, 2014 during the beef course, and Vignoles, 2014 with the raspberry dessert.

Summit County Farm Bureau president, Gale Betterly was able to present a check for $4,600.00 to the Ronald McDonald House of Akron, at the end of the beautiful evening, which brought the total donated from this event to RMcDH of Akron over the past three years to $15,600.00.

The Summit’s Plow to Chow committee wishes to thank the many many volunteers that worked tirelessly throughout the event, the guests who supported the event with their presence, and the generous donors that made the gift to the Ronald McDonald House of Akron possible.
