Oh my, what a wet May this has become! In my travels around the state in the last few days, I have seen crops that don’t look too bad, ground that isn’t even planted and ground that is flooded. It has gone from one extreme to another. It is so sad because I know how hard all the p
eople work in the production of food. Farmers in northeast Ohio seem to have the wettest soils. However, west of I-71 when farmers planted April 23rd through April 26th the seed had not sprouted before we had those cold wet days and nights. The corn and soybean seeds rotted in the ground. When their fields dry up, they will be replanting. So, it will be a long spring for many farmers. All these conditions leave the farmer frustrated because there is still rain in the forecast and it is getting later and later to plant. Yes, you can tell that I have been a grain farmer and a produce farmer’s wife!!! I have spent many 16 hour days driving tractor. In your own travels around the state, please be mindful of the farmers’ slow moving equipment.
We have so many great Summit County Farmers’ Markets with wonderful fresh fruits, vegetables and nursery items that will be available until fall when we get a frost. I always hope that the frost is later giving us more time to enjoy all that our local farmers grow and provide for us. Our county farmers work extremely hard to provide us with the best on the market.
