Mother Nature’s summer monsoons subsided, the clouds parted, and the sun came out just in time for Summit’s Plow to Chow

July 20, 2017 By Jan Weaver

Summit County Farm Bureau hosted Summit’s Plow to Chow, an outdoor dining experience benefiting the Ronald McDonald House of Akron on Thursday, July 13, 2017 at The Winery at Wolf Creek in Norton.  The threat of additional showers, nor the oppressive humidity couldn’t drown the spirits of the guests that reveled in the view of the picturesque vineyards.

Arriving guests were welcomed to the winery and directed to the outdoor greeting area.  Relaxing with a glass of wine and hors d’oeuvres while listening to music was encouraged as guests moved through the delectable stations.  Wines were paired with each of the heavy hors d’oeuvres

Guests enjoyed the gorgeous view of the vineyards as they moved through the five gourmet stations of almost all locally “donated” ingredients, prepared by Chef Johnny Schulze of Zydeco Bistro, and local wine pairings, provided by Andy Troutman from The Winery at Wolf Creek.

Summit’s Plow to Chow was able to raise awareness of agriculture to non-farming individuals by connecting the diners to the origins of their food with each station highlighting a different commodity.  Guests enjoyed from each station:  Produce – Vegetable Crudite and Fruit Display with local and domestic cheese, carrots, peppers, broccoli and cauliflower, local and seasonal fruit/melon.  Corn maque choux hush puppies with bistro sauce and mini cherry tomatoes stuffed with herb goat cheese.  Poultry – Chicken, chive and garlic sausage fresh ground chicken thigh patty with honey mustard sauce.  Pork – BBQ pulled pork slider from slow cooked pork butt with citrus slaw from cabbages, cucumbers, carrots, and lemon.  Beef – Certified Angus Beef Tenderloin brochette with red onion, peppers and tomato skewer.  Fruit – Summer berry beignets with powder sugar and mini praline cookie (a pecan caramel sugar cookie).

Andy Troutman selected the perfect wines for each station:  Rhapsody from Wolf Creek Vineyards, NV, Traminette from Troutman Vineyards, 2015, Chardonnay from Wolf Creek Vineyards, 2015, Exodus from Wolf Creek Vineyards, NV, Blue from Wolf Creek Vineyards, NV, Cabernet Sauvignon from Wolf Creek Vineyards, 2014, Redemption from Wolf Creek Vineyards, NV and Vignoles from Wolf Creek Vineyards, 2015.

Summit County Farm Bureau president, Andy Troutman was able to present a check for $5,000.00 to the Ronald McDonald House of Akron, at the end of the beautiful evening, which brought the total donated from this event to RMcDH of Akron over the past four years to $20,600.00.

The Summit’s Plow to Chow committee wishes to thank the many volunteers that worked tirelessly throughout the event, the guests who supported the event with their presence, and the generous donors that made the gift to the Ronald McDonald House of Akron possible.  Please support those who have supported us . . .
