For the past 20 years the only livestock you would see on our farm is dairy cattle. There was a time when there were pigs and chickens, but that time has past and the focus of the farm has been centered around making milk. I wanted to expand my horizons as a farmer and dip my toe into something different. After listening to agricultural podcasts and reading a number of farming blogs, I came to the conclusion that raising turkeys was the direction I wanted to go. I’ve learned that turkeys are clumsy, curious critters. Even as chicks they are just slightly different than chickens. That’s why I’ve gravitated towards them. They are easy to grow and largely take care of themselves.
I buy a white breasted turkey from Meyer hatchery located right here in Ohio. I feed them a mixture of ground corn we grow on the farm and a protein supplement. They also drink lots of water even when it’s cool outside so I always make sure their waterer is full. We got our turkey chicks in the middle of August, so they will be 15 weeks old at the time of slaughter. Our friends at Pleasant Valley Poultry process our birds and are USDA certified. We expect them to be anywhere between 15-20lbs and we sell our turkey for $4.00 a pound. In order to ensure peek freshness, we have our turkeys available for pickup the day before thanksgiving. You will not find a fresher bird.
If you are interested in buying one of our turkeys go to the Hartong Farm Facebook page and send me a message. Or you can email me at mrhartong@gmail.com! You can also read one of our many reviews saying that it’s some of the best turkey around.
