It’s that time of the year, WINTER – long nights and short days. Many families are looking for ideas to entertain themselves on “game night” and a good ole’ fashion deck of playing cards often fits the bill. But do you know the original meaning of a deck of playing cards?
A deck of playing cards has 52 cards, just like a year has 52 weeks.
The two colors, red and black, represent day and night.
There are four suits; hearts, diamonds, spades and clubs. These align with the four seasons that have 13 weeks per season (or 13 lunar cycles per year).
The twelve court cards represent the twelve months of the year.
Interestingly, if we add each of the cards of the deck, ace + ace + ace + ace + two + two + two + two + three + … etc., we will get 364.
Can you believe that a deck of cards is an agricultural calendar that teaches us about the weeks and the seasons of the year.
With each new season, it was King’s week, followed by Queen’s week, then Jack’s week and so on until Aces week. Then the season changed and we started over with a new color.
Jokers were used in leap year.
Now, get yourself a fresh deck of cards and play!
