The month of February brings mating season for many of the farm’s varmints or as we call them, “nuisance animals”. To learn more, check out these two articles from our archives:
Skunks
Skunks mate in Ohio in late February and continue through March. Females are in heat for four to five days and will typically mate several times during this period. Males tend to be a bit promiscuous and will move from den to den mating with females. The female skunk lives in a dug den or one used by other animals that they have taken over. If you see one around your home, they have most likely found home under a structure in your area.
Coyotes
Mating season for coyotes runs from late December through March, however, coyote breeding typically peaks in late February and early March. The gestation period averages 58-63 days. It’s a dangerous time for your pets as during this time coyotes may become more aggressive. It has been reported that “The coyote gets your dog to chase him and then somewhere in the distance the pack waits for your dog. The outcome is tragic for your pet, as they can & will attack and kill. Please be aware that the risk increases during mating season.”
