Carl Harp Nursery is a third-generation owner of the nursery. His grandfather Carl C. Harp moved the nursery to their current location in the early 1960s, focusing on the popular plants of the time, mainly taxus shrubs. After taking over the operation in the 80s, Carl’s father would
diversify the plants offered, while also expanding the business’ landscape design and installation services. The business would begin to struggle and fizzle out at the turn of the century – his grandfather was getting up in age, there was a barn fire, Carl had moved away for college, and then the recession hit. In 2016, Carl would re-establish the family business
as a part-time service and then go full time in 2018.
With one of his primary goals being to keep landscaping affordable he has lowered markup and relied mostly on word-of-mouth advertising to build his business…and it has worked. His hard work and dedication have led to surpassing his sales threshold the first year, the second year, and continues to grow and thrive. You can often see their fresh produce in Norton at the Norton Farmers Market or the Norton Cider Festival, as well as at their farm.
Carl Harp enjoys working with native plants, particularly plants that can benefit pollinators and wildlife. Contributing to the local ecosystem is incredibly important to him. Protecting family agriculture and educational programming are the reasons he is a Farm Bureau Member.
