Aren’t you constantly amazed at the Facebook “experts” that feel the need to add their two cents to a “livestock” educational post, basically displaying their ignorance. If they would just remember …
A life with livestock is different than:
… visiting the 4-H barns at the county fair.
… volunteering at a rescue once or twice a week.
… being a feeder or employee drawing a paycheck at a facility.
… donating money to some backyard rescue.
… being a friend stopping by to lend a hand.
It’s different when:
… you have your own livestock in your own backyard.
… you are solely responsible for the upkeep, vet bills, feed bill, hay bill.
… it is freezing outside and you know you have to get up and go out to feed
YOUR animals, because no one else will.
… you are running a 103 degree fever but your livestock need hay and you have to go do it anyways.
… it is your responsibility for fixing a broken fence in the middle of a thunder storm.
… you habitually double and triple check gates to be sure they are latched.
… you get a 4 AM call from your neighbor saying your animals are out and you have to go in pajamas and wrangle ‘em back home.
… you are filthy, tired and sore and come in at night, but you can’t remember if you turned the water off or not and have to go back out to double check.
THIS is life with livestock. No amount of formal education nor arm chair expertise can prepare you for LIFE WITH LIVESTOCK!
It’s not a hobby, it’s a lifestyle, a lifestyle many of us have chosen! We want to send a THANK YOU to all our livestock “farmers” that have made that choice!
