It seems like we’ve had no spring this year. Yes, the calendar said that spring had arrived, but the days were still cool or cold. Then we had those spring showers. Now, we have gone straight to summer. Other areas of the state have some really good looking crops. However, northeast Ohio has not done as well. And even further northeast in Ohio, farmers have less planted than we do in this area. It is such a shame as farmers work so hard to get those crops planted timely, as that gives them the best yield. They are at the mercy of Mother Nature and it is so tough, knowing you can’t do anything about it. Those electric, gas, seed, fertilizer, spray, equipment and mortgage bills are still going to be arriving in the mail whether the crop is planted or not. Farmers love what they do, it is just that some years are really harder than others. I was talking to a fellow farmer the other day and he said it just seems like the last 3 or 4 years have been so much rougher because of the weather. We use to have more sunny days in a row which made it so much e
asier to plant, make hay and care for the crops.
All our local farmers who supply all those wonderful farm markets have had a tough spring. Hopefully, things will turn around so that we can enjoy the fruits of their labor at our local Summit County Farm Markets. I can’t wait to have locally grown lettuce and tomato for that delicious BLT sandwich. I’m anxious to see you at one of our local markets.
