Ground covers are an important part of farm life as they improve the ground tilth and hence productivity. When a cash crop is finished no erosion from water or wind is able to take the valuable top soil away. Also deep rooted crops such as clover and a special beet will frack the plow pans that are caused by the compression of the plow. Finally filter strips along creeks and streams and also acres of coverages by cover crops provide a filter that helps to prevent water pollution from phosphorous and nitrates.
